The Sails

A Certain Slant of Light Photography

Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre’s debut in 2002 was met with much snickering and eye-rolling. Its modern facade resembled a durian (prickly, really smelly, tropical fruit) crossed with a common housefly. Not very flattering for a venue meant to be Singapore’s performing arts center. These days, it has sort of “melded” into the Singapore skyline and has become an architectural icon in its own right. I love zooming into the sails of the structure, and think they make wonderfully abstract pictures. Largely due to how the fins seem to give the appearance of movement.
