Nine people including three civilians were killed when gunmen wearing army uniforms stormed a police station in northern India near the border with Pakistan
Security forces were on high alert in cities across India last night after three gunmen killed nine people at a police station in the country’s northern Punjab state, in the first such attack there in more than a decade.
The three men, armed with automatic weapons, took control of the Gurdaspur district police station at 5am yesterday. Gunfire could be heard throughout the day in the small town, which is approximately 10 miles from India’s border with Pakistan.
All three attackers were killed in the clashes with Indian security forces. Three policemen also died, among them Punjab’s state police superintendent.
While attacks on police stations are relatively common in Indian-administered Kashmir, this is the first such assault in Punjab for several years.
